Q2 2017 to see further increases in zirconium chemical pricesQ2 2017 will see a continued trend upwards for the price of zirconium chemicals. Iluka Resources have increased their zircon sand price by 6% for Q2, following an increase of 6% in Q1 2017. Most zircon sand suppliers follow the lead of the largest global producer of zircon sand. However, at price levels of USD 1000/mt CIF China port, the price is still well below levels seen a few years ago when it reached USD 2500/mt CIF China port. The price of caustic soda (sodium hydroxide), a key consumable used in the production of zirconium chemicals and zirconium oxide, has increased by 75% in the last 6 months. This has been on the back of increased demand and some reduced output due to factory closures in China on environmental grounds. It is generally thought locally that the price and availability is now stabilising. The increase in raw material costs has led to zirconium chemical and zirconium oxide price increases of 10% so far in 2017 and we could see further increases during the 2nd half of the year.
